Susan Bradley will design a contemporary sculptural summerhouse called Twist that visitors can walk round and sit within, inspired by the Museum’s collection of rural artefacts, specifically corn dollies.
Susan Bradley has created a contemporary summer house that visitors can walk round and sit within, based on the form of a corn dolly. Made from stainless steel in place of straw, the scale and material gives the piece a contemporary twist, although the form is familiar to the museum’s audience, connecting with nostalgic references to pastoral Lincolnshire and traditional crafts. Twist, commissioned to mark the 400th anniversary of Alford Manor, will challenge thinking about a traditional country craft and will also celebrate rural heritage, locality and provenance. It is a landmark piece for the Victorian Walled Garden – a major feature in its imaginative redesign. Lighting has been integrated within the installation, so that it will become a focal point in the garden for evening events as well as for daytime visitors.
This commission builds on Susan’s portfolio of large scale outdoor designs in metal, for which she has become renown. Twist, like her award winning laser cut Outdoor WallpaperTM, reinterprets a traditional object to create a highly original outcome that challenges the audience yet is also familiar.
Take part: Young people are creating retail products inspired by the Museum and its collection. They will work through the project like a design professional would - starting with a brief, through research and design, ensuring financial viability and finally pitching their designs to local business professionals at a ‘Dragons Den’ event. The best designs will be batch produced for sale in the museum shop later in the year.
