Place setting will draw on the architectural treasures along this stretch of the Thames: Orleans House, Ham House and Strawberry Hill.
Historic mansions and museums line the banks of the Thames in Richmond, with collections and exhibitions that showcase this ‘arcadia’ on the edge of London. As visitors stroll along a peaceful riverside road into secluded woodland gardens, they come across Orleans House Gallery, with its stunning 18th century interior design.
Drawing inspiration from the architectural details of Orleans House, and neighbouring Ham House and Strawberry Hill, Place Setting references plasterwork, sugarwork, blackwork (an embroidery technique used to decorate clothing) and damask. Quilling (paper filigree) will also be used to stunning effect, reflecting the ceilings of Orleans House and Strawberry Hill. The installation will be a six metre banqueting table, set for a fantasy guest list that spans four centuries. Aristocrats and architects will be seated alongside cooks and nursemaids, and each will have their history embroidered on a napkin with both famous and forgotten stories.
